We train together for 5K, 10k, 1/2 marathon, full marathon, and tri-athlon races.  We are determined to stay fit,  reach our goals, and maintain the wonderful friendships that bloom when women exercise together. there! It's been a long time, huh?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I'm pleased to announce that the &lt;span class="goog-spellcheck-word"&gt;NWWR&lt;/span&gt; meetings will resume. Remember that this club depends&amp;nbsp;100% on YOU showing up. Beginning, this Saturday, May 1st we will meet for the whole month of May at the William Jewell college track at 9am. From there you will have the option to a) do the track workout provided below or b) go on a run/walk through campus and the surrounding area...however long or short you prefer.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The track workout:&lt;br /&gt;---1 lap walk warm-up&lt;br /&gt;---sprint the straight-aways as fast as possible (this can range from a very fast walk or a very fast run)&lt;br /&gt;---walk the curves (this is your recovery, it should be VERY different in speed than the straight-aways.&lt;br /&gt;Continue the sprint/recovery for 45 minutes unless this is your first time out then you might want to cut it down to 30 minutes. Remember gradual progression is key...we don't want to injure ourselves the first time out.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sadly, Mendy nor I will not be there this Saturday but carry on without us. The H1N1 has turned into double pnemonia which has led to blood clots in his lungs.  With all the medical bills they'll be facing along with the two of them being out of work for quite some time now and the holidays approaching I can't stop thinking about how to help.  Here's what I came up with:&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;Next Saturday, December 12th at 8am at the Liberty Community Center we'll be walking 3 miles (or whatever you can do) for Debbie.  I'd like to get a  group picture of everyone who shows up to walk (even if you don't know her) and send it to her to let her know we're all thinking of her.  I'd also like to collect any donation you'd be willing to give and put it together as a little way of helping out....anything from $5-$20 or more...whatever you can.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;So what I need from you is help to spread the word. Ginger and Johnna are hosting a bake sale this Saturday, June 20th, 2009as part of the Worldwide Vegan Bake Sale.  They’re raising money for Mercy for Animals.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;All of the goodies they are baking will be vegan (no animal products, which means no butter, eggs or bacon) and some of the goodies will also be gluten-free and refined sugar-free.  I guarantee you will think they are tasty AND they are almost guilt-free. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;On Saturday, you can find them at the parking lot at the trail head of the Westboro/Canterbury Greenway on Withers Rd. in Liberty. It's a great explanation of why I never lost any weight last year when I trained for a marathon.  Maybe some of you can relate too?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Why Am I Gaining Weight During Marathon Training?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;By Christine Luff, About.com&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Updated: February 4, 2009&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;About.com Health's Disease and Condition content is reviewed by our Medical Review Board &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Question: Why Am I Gaining Weight During Marathon Training?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I thought I would lose weight when training for a marathon, but I actually have gained weight! Why is that?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Answer: You're not alone. Some marathoners-in-training hope to lose weight during their training, but they're surprised when they actually gain a few pounds or hit a weight loss plateau. One explanation is that as you're training, you're building more muscle mass, which is denser than fat. So while that may translate to an overall weight gain, your body fat percentage has decreased and you're more toned than you were before. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Another explanation is that your body is learning to store carbohydrates as fuel (glycogen) for your long runs. Those glycogen stores will add more weight. Your body also requires additional water to break down and store the glycogen, so that will also add extra weight. that distance training requires runners to increase their glycogen stores. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Also, you may have been increasing your calorie intake without realizing it. Keep in mind that running a lot does not give you carte blanche to eat whatever you want. The basic principle for weight loss still applies: You must burn more calories than you consume. To lose a pound, you have to burn, through exercise or life functions, about 3500 calories. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;With all the calories you burn by running, some people are surprised when they don't lose weight during marathon training, but they forget that they're inhaling a quart of ice cream and a dozen Oreos for a snack after their run. Make sure you stock your kitchen with healthy foods, so when the "post-run hungries" hit, you'll be prepared with nutritious foods, not empty calories. It's normal to feel hungry when training for a marathon. Just try to stick to healthy foods and snacks. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It's also helpful to track your food intake in a training journal. It will make you think twice about the foods you're putting in your mouth and also help you figure out what foods work best for you. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Another area where long distance runners get into trouble is drinking too many calories. Just because you're training for a marathon doesn't mean that you need to constantly drink sugary sports drinks. While it's important that you replace electrolytes during your long runs, you don't need to constantly have a sports drink at your fingertips the rest of the time. Stay away from fruit juices and regular soda since they also add a lot of calories to your diet, but don't make you feel full. Plain water is fine for staying hydrated during the week. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you've been eating a nutritious diet and you still find that you're gaining weight, try not to focus too much on that number on the scale. It could be inaccurate since our weight does fluctuate depending on what time of the day or month we weigh ourselves. Pay attention to other measurements such how your clothes are fitting, how toned you feel, body fat percentage, or inches lost. And if you really want to lose weight, remember that healthy weight loss takes time. Even with all the running that you're doing, you should not aim to lose more than a pound a week. We're going to use these routes for the whole month versus switching it up each week.  &lt;br /&gt;Here's the plan!&lt;br /&gt;-We're going to meet at the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church Parking Lot&lt;br /&gt;-We'll meet at 7:30am every Saturday&lt;br /&gt;-Choose from 3 different routes&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;*Notice the 1.5 mile route.  We would really like to grow people within our group and realize it's been a cold winter.  If you've been cooped up for the last 3 or 4 months and want to get active but don't know where to begin the 1.5 mile route is for you!  We're very interestd in getting walkers and/or walkers that would like to become runners filtered into the group.  I realize we all need to start somewhere so please think about coming and completing whatever you can. Home Ave and a left on NE 97th st and a left on N Arlington Ave then a right on 96th street to left on Flintlock. Flintlock turns into 96th street and then you should go all the way to Benson Place and a right on Tullis Dr. Turn right on NE 101st and a right on N Wallace Ave to a right on McKinley ave back to 96th street. Take 96th to a right on Flintlock. Take Flintlock to Copperleaf subdivision and turn left on  NE 92nd st then right on Glenwood Ave to NE 88th street and back to a left on Flintlock. On Flintlock cross over 152 and go all the way to 76th Street and turn around at 76th and cross back over 152. Goals are always a good thing to keep us going...as many of you know all too well.   We are going to "adopt" the &lt;a href="http://www.lincolnrun.org/marathon.htm"&gt;Lincoln Marathon &amp; 1/2 Marathon&lt;/a&gt; for the NWWR spring race goal.  Girls, can you say "road trip"!!!!!  Lincoln is just far enough away to make you feel like you are actually going some where, but close enough to go easy on the pocket book.  You can make a weekend out of it and bring your hubby.  Maybe you can talk him into doing the 1/2.&lt;br /&gt;Anyway, if you your goal is a spring marathon you need to start climbing NOW.  And if you are wanting to train for a half marathon then you should start climbing soon.  The hotels are already starting to get booked so plan to do that soon.  Mendy and Mandy would love for as many of you as possible to join us in this goal....let us know soon.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you are running this Saturday then here is the route. It was good advice.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Aside from paying online I have pretty much decided to do the Lincoln Marathon in Lincoln NE.  It is the first weekend in May so I know I need to get my ankle strong and start adding on the mileage.  With that said I am planning on running at 7:30 for the next several Saturdays and I hope that some of you want to join me.  I will not be able to run the last weekend in January because I will be finishing up a Pilate's certification.  I will plan on starting at the parking lot across from the Liberty Police Station (also across from Studio 10).  Let me know if any of you are interested.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I know that our group has died down a bit due to the extreme cold, holidays, and just pure hibernation, but the near 60 degree temp today is giving me a little jolt of inspiration.  Mandy and I have brainstormed several times about ways to increase our numbers.  We have also talked about ways to make our group more organized and efficient.  I absolutely love that many of you are dedicated members helping to plan runs, organize breakfasts, and even being creative with the Resolution Run.  If any of you have any good ideas please email Mandy or I.  Here are a few thoughts of mine.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1)I spoke with Gary Gribble's about giving them our official Roster (but first we have to have one) to make our club a club you can get 10% off of products if you come in mentioning our club name.  I think we could look into doing that at Metro Walk and Run as well.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2)Putting fliers out at local businesses like the bike stores, running stores, and such (this would mean that someone skilled and knowledgeable in making fliers would have to be willing to make us some).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3)Have a spring "Open Run" as opposed to an open house in which we all invite everyone on our email lists to join.  This could allow us to get more members and collect everyone members data for an official Roster...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Well, I know we have some creative thinkers and go getter's in this running club. It's going to be a really fun race, one that's different from all the rest.  If you're interested please post a comment to this blog.  The first 15 that sign up will recieve a tote bag (you'll need it for the race).  Hope to see you there!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As far as a race fee goes, we'd like to collect a $5 donation from each participant.  The money will go to the Food Bank. Take Flintlock to Copperleaf subdivision and turn left on NE 92nd st then right on Glenwood Ave to NE 88th street and back to a left on Flintlock. Turn around at 152 and go back on Flintlock and back to the Church. On Flintlock cross over 152 and go all the way to 76th Street and turn around at 76th and cross back over 152. You look good!  I just thought I'd try to send you a  picture of our San Francisco team.  Hopefully, I've attached it  correctly.  One more friend of Mandy's went, Sara Wolf, but she didn't  start with us.  It was a great time!  I almost cried when I crossed  the finish line.  As you know, this has been a walk of faith for me and  when I got sick the night before I thought maybe it just wasn't meant to  be.  But then I decided I'd get up and go and just see what happened...and  I never stopped once in the whole 13 miles!!!  What a testimony for trust  in Him!  He took good care of me.  It was wonderful.  Of course,  all of us from the marathon recognized each other at the airport the next day,  even if we'd never met because we were all pretty sore, limping along.  It  was fun to have that connection with women I didn't even know.  We all knew  we'd gone through a similar experience together and persevered. Click on the links below to see the maps.  We are meeting at the &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0"&gt;Copperleaf&lt;/span&gt; neighborhood pool.  Remember, we have a 5:30 meet time and a 7:00 meet time.  This seemed to work well last week and &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1"&gt;accommodate&lt;/span&gt; &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2"&gt;every one's&lt;/span&gt; schedules.  Jenny has discovered a new mapping site.  Check it out and see what you think.  We are also in need of planners. Here are directions from Liberty...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Take I-35 S to I-29 N&lt;br /&gt;Take I-29 N to I-635 S via Exit 3B on the left towards Kansas &lt;br /&gt;Merge onto MO-9 via Exit 11B toward Parkville&lt;br /&gt;Take MO-9 into downtown Parkville &lt;br /&gt;Go straight onto 1st St. instead of following MO-9 when it curves &lt;br /&gt;Turn left on Main St. and follow it across the railroad tracks&lt;br /&gt;Park in the Parking lot to the left&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This is the parking for English Landing Park by the riverfront.  FYI, they will have a Farmer's Market starting around 7, so I think we should park closest to the railroad tracks. It was a bit muggy and we got a late start, but thanks to those who did show up today.  Next week we will be up next to the airport on a hopefully out and back very flat road. I tend to think big about everything.  I have always wanting it to be a club which everyone is involved in the route planning.   I love that this has been a success so far.  I love that I have someone to meet every Saturday morning.  In my opinion running and walking are social sports.  I am a very social being so this fits me well. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Considering the growth we have had by welcoming walkers and gaining a few more runners, I think it is time to set some guidelines and look to the future for other positions needed.  Here are a few guideline we will be implementing from now on:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1) &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Each week will have two routes.  One route will have a longer distance and one will have a shorter distance.  &lt;/span&gt; They can be out and backs or loops.  This was inspired by two routes that Jenny planned last Saturday.  I love the options.  This is also allow for different levels of runners and walkers to accomplish their long run/walk goals. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2)&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;We will continue to have 2 meeting times: 5:30 for longer distances, 6:15 for shorter distances.  &lt;/span&gt;This is especially important as we get into July and August.  We do not want to risk dehydration from the humidity and heat of the summer.  I highly encourage those walkers training for the marathon to start at the earlier time as well.  You will be out in the elements longer so it is very important to get done by 8:30 or 9:00 a.m. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3)  &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;From now on&lt;/span&gt; &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Mendy and Mandy  will post the route to the website. &lt;/span&gt; &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;The person who plans our route needs to email it to Mendy or Mandy by the Tuesday prior to that Saturday.&lt;/span&gt;  This will eliminate confusion for those who do not know how to post on blogs.  This will also allow Mendy or Mandy to post it to NWWR.blogspot.com in a timely manor so everyone can print the map, plan schedules with our husbands ( most of us are juggling children and husbands schedules too), and map quest the location where we start.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;4)&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;We will  have route facilitator sign-ups every 2 months.&lt;/span&gt;  This will avoid confusion and last minute planning. I thought it was a perfect course with just enough flatness and a perfect proportion of hills. Funny how driving a road doesn't feel that hilly and then you run it and its a whole new ball game. We missed sisters Jen and Becky this week. Don't think that they were slacking off. They were doing a Triathlon together. I am sure they will be back next week. Mandy was back this week as she pushes through IT band issues. Katie and Mary were little firecrackers off and running (pun on purpose). They are hard for me to keep up with, but I know I am ok if I can just keep them in my sight...and I did. Jenny and Renee pushed through extra mileage this week...good job girls. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Shelly is planning our run this coming Memorial Day weekend. Go about ¾ of a mile and you will see the entrance to Woodneath on your left (Shoal Creek Elementary sits on the corner).  Turn into the subdivision (I believe it is 90th St.).  Hunter Ave is the 3rd Street and you will make a right. Being a trainer, I think it is really important to go at your own pace, but also continue to challenge yourself. The body is, in most cases, able to do so much more that we give it credit for. If you did 4 last week, then do 5 this week. Remember, walking is ok!!!!! Just in case you're still uneasy about adding mileage with us we are now going to make sure that every run has options of less mileage. We are all in this together.........be supportive, not competitive!!!! She enjoyed the peacefulness of last weeks run so much that she is "going country" again this week. It is an out and back. You can go 2 miles by stopping at the 1, 4 miles by stopping at the 2, or 6 miles by stopping at the 3. Mendy will mark the miles on the country road with orange spray paint.
